Built in 1961, Paul Bunyan’s in Minocqua has been a tradition in this lakeside town for 50 years. John and Betty Tonne have been your hosts here from opening day. In fact, Paul Bunyan’s Minocqua is what brought John Tonne and Betty Hastreiter together.

Back in 1961, Betty was the first waitress employed with Paul Bunyan’s. A love interest grew between John and Betty who celebrated their 44th Anniversary in 2009. On any given day you’ll be sure to see Betty busing tables, training staff, or helping in the gift shop. John is well known for walking through the dining room in his crooked cook hat to one side. On the busiest of days, you’ll be sure to see him working the dining room entrance.

Also active in the daily management is John and Betty’s son Mike Tonne. Mike is the driving force behind the marketing of Paul Bunyan’s as well as a buyer for the Minocqua gift shop. It’s not uncommon to see Mike jumping in to help bus tables, serve food or assist customers in the gift shop.
